Our Song!

Me and Simon who I am working with to create our music video have selected our song , which his friend Charlotte will be singing and featuring in our video.

In order to use the song we have asked for her permission to avoid any copy right issues and I will display    an email to confirm this from our artist,

As part of my audience research I will make a survey to see what opinions I gain from our song on www.surveymonkey.com , and then I will send this to my friends on facebook to gather different opinions on the song.

Preliminary Exercise

For our preliminary task, me and my group had to practice lip syncing in our own music video. We were given the song 'Dont Go Breaking My Heart' by Elton John and Kiki Dee and a song sheet to learn the lyrics.
For our song to be loud enough to hear we had to Blue -tooth it from an imac computer to our mobile phone or other devise. We then had to play our song out loud, I have learnt that singing out loud to the song it more convincing than trying to mime as when you sing there is more personality and a better quality video as it is difficult to match the lyrics exactly and keep in time with the song.

Whilst filming our video we had to shoot different parts, one of both of the singers, then one of each from a mid shot.
After we had finished filming the song we had to edit, and the process our clip by cutting up the clips to see which ones we wanted to keep and which position we wanted them to be in.

  • Firstly we used 'screen grab' to the process of editing, we used whole takes whilst filming to make the video look more realistic. I also learnt how to use the layering technique in the editing process to create a different style of editing, with this technique we could allow more than one of the same person by copying their image and pasting it somewhere else in the screen.
  • Once we had lined up all of our shots in the positions we wanted them to be, and made the timing correct between the song and our lip syncing we used the 'Mountain Tool' to grab parts of the video we wanted to keep by dragging the lines up, this way it was much easier for us to see what we wanted to keep, and chose the postition of edits we had wanted.

The video had divided opinions over its quirkiness however.

78. Godley and Creme's 'Cry' 1985 video is interesting as the faces merge into eachother creating different people each time. The unique technology of changing parts of peoples faces in an image gained the video popularity.

Jamie Thraves British Film Writer and Director

Jamie Thraves began making early short experimental films in 1989 at Hull university. He has won awards for his experimental films as he was involved with the company Factory Films. He began by shooting three very low budget music videos. After accomplishing fame Jamie made his success from the band Radiohead with their song Just. Jamie became successful by taking lyrics out of a song, but not presenting them all in his videos which gave a unique theme to the video.
Jamie's recent video in July cost about £20,000 and had the shooting time of 2 days. He has used the music videos 'Just' by Radiohead and 'The Scientist' by Coldplay to achieve being a director. Jamie's tips to his own success in music and directing are to use lyrics but not be to literal, and to go with the emotion of the lyrics. Now he has three featured films which are
- The Low Down
- The Cry of the Owl
- Treacle Jr

Radiohead's song 'Just' with the help of Thraves became very popular with lots of attention for its strong narrative structure and use of subtitles. The video featuring a man lying down on the pavement and is confronted by an angry crowd. What the man says at the end of song is used purposely to make the audience think of what he could of said and is a cliff hanger. The strange use of people lying down on the pavement attracts viewers with its quirky technique. There is a good use of instrumental work and uniqueness. Radiohead's video had a budget of £100,000 and had to be completed in three days.

Jamie Thraves helped make the music video for 'Coldplay's' song 'The Scientist. The video won three moon men awards in 2003 at the VMA awards including best direction and best breakthrough video. It has a budget of £200,000 and had a limited time of three days to be shot. The video attracted its audience by the technique of going backwards through the video, this would have been hard to achieve and needed talent as the singer had to mime the words whilst walking backwards which is cleverly achieved. The words 'back to the start' symbolize the desire to go back to the beginning as we later see at the end of video that the actor is upset as he and his loved one were in a car crash reflective of the beginning of the story, and he wants to go back to a time when this never happened. The video is successful because it portrays a potentially real life story where we can feel emotion.

Where to view a Promo Music Video?

Music promo video's are seen mostly on the internet and television by viewers, they have grown rapidly in cost, quality and differ in themes, or telling stories.

  •  YouTube is one of the best places to watch music video's as they are free of cost, and are the official video's shown on television in good quality. Some of the best music videos on YouTube have over 1 million hits showing how popular they are to the public.
  •  You can also read about music videos in newspaper articles and television reports
  • The best music videos are shown constantly as more people will gradually know the song, or be interested in watching the video ,especially if they enjoy the song, this will then depend on how much publicity the artist receives from the video. However because it is so easy to access music videos online or on the television CD sales have decreased by a great amount because people can now access music by other ways.
  • MTV and the VMA awards have also increased the hits for you tube, as they too display the latest artists music and increase its publicity. The MTV channel has now increased with different genres of music and has a wider range for the public.
